The human devastation of the Civil War both horrified her and ignited her determination to make a lasting difference. Whether tending the wounded on the battlefield or making impassioned pleas to Lincoln's White House on behalf of those in urgent need, Clara Barton moved the nation. She brought the fledgling International Red Cross Movement to America, with its dedication to easing human suffering and its reliance on voluntary support. From 1881 to today, Clara Barton's vision of helping those in need continues to live strong in the American Red Cross.
