Example: Let's say you're 40 years old. If you make a $1,000 gift now through a deferred gift annuity, you'll receive $268 per year beginning at age 65. This is a return of 26.8%. You may also receive a current charitable income tax deduction of more then $450.00, which can used in the year the gift is made or it may be carried over for five additional years. A deferred gift annuity is similar to an IRA. You can make a gift to the American Red Cross and receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction slightly less then the amount of the donation. You'll also receive an income for life at a later date, often at retirement, when you're likely to be in a lower tax bracket. In this way, you'll make a gift to the American Red Cross, receive a significant tax deduction today, and provide for the future with retirement.
